Meet the Mission Viejo Team Behind Mainspring Garage Door Co.
Our Mission Viejo crew is the same group you’ll see at homes from Rancho Santa Margarita to Laguna Niguel. We’re not a dispatch board matching you to whoever’s available. These are our people, trained in-house, background-checked, and working under the same K.E.Y.S. code we’ve used since Carl started building this team. Every one of them can explain what’s wrong with your door, fix it, and put the warranty in writing before they leave.
Our People
Carl Dutton, Owner
Carl started Mainspring in 1984, naming the company for the torsion spring that carries a garage door’s full weight, something most homeowners never think about until it snaps. He still answers the phone himself some nights, and he reviews every complaint personally, though there aren’t many. Carl’s a firm believer that a repair business lives or dies by whether the technician shows up when promised and whether the quoted price matches the final bill. He trains every new hire himself on the 90-Day Done Right Promise, and he keeps a whiteboard in the office with the names of customers who called back with problems, which he says is the only metric that matters. When he’s not working, he’s usually fishing off Dana Point, badly.
Marcus T., Lead Technician
Marcus has been with Mainspring for fourteen years and handles the calls other companies won’t touch, like custom wood doors in gated Coto de Caza communities where the original builder went under decades ago. He’s factory-certified on LiftMaster, Genie, and Chamberlain openers, and he’s the one who figured out why so many spring failures in Mission Viejo’s older Trabuco Highlands homes trace back to the original builder using undersized hardware for the coastal humidity. Marcus carries a notebook where he sketches door track layouts for weird installations, and he’s got a running bet with the apprentice about whether he can complete any repair without using a single four-letter word. He hasn’t won yet.
Elena V., Senior Installer
Elena joined us in 2019 after eight years doing commercial dock doors in industrial Anaheim, which means she’s seen every way a heavy door can go wrong and every shortcut that causes it. She specializes in full replacements, the kind where we’re pulling out a thirty-year-old one-piece door and fitting a modern sectional with insulated panels for a home in Pacific Hills. Elena is particularly good at talking homeowners through their options without pushing the most expensive choice, a skill Carl noticed during her trial period and made permanent. She keeps a collection of failed rollers and bent tracks in her truck to show people exactly what happened, which sounds strange until you see how quickly it ends the “do I really need this?” conversation. On weekends she restores vintage motorcycles, slowly.
Dave P., Service Coordinator
Dave is the live voice answering when you call (562) 262-6410 at 11 PM on a Sunday because your door won’t close and you’re not sure if it’s an emergency or just inconvenient. He’s been with Mainspring since 2015 and knows which technician is where, what parts are on which truck, and whether your particular Wayne Dalton model has that known issue with the torqueMaster spring system. Dave schedules every appointment with a thirty-minute arrival window, not a four-hour block, and he calls ahead if traffic on the 5 or the 133 shifts that window even slightly. He grew up in Mission Viejo, graduated from Capistrano Valley High, and still lives in a condo off Marguerite Parkway, which means he’s giving directions to his own neighbors half the time.
Jake R., Apprentice
Jake started with us in 2023, fresh from a general construction program at Saddleback College, and he’s working through our journeyman track under Marcus’s direct supervision. He’s already certified on basic torsion spring replacement and opener installation, though he hasn’t been cleared for high-cycle commercial springs yet, that comes after two years or five hundred supervised jobs, whichever comes second. Jake’s particular talent is diagnosing opener logic board failures, which he attributes to too many hours troubleshooting his own car’s electrical system. He asks a lot of questions, which Carl encourages, and he’s the reason we now keep a specific cable drum size in stock for certain 1980s-era doors in the Casta del Sol area, after he noticed the pattern on his twelfth service call there.
One Standard, Every Job
The Mission Viejo team works under the same rules Carl established in 1984. Background check before the first day. Uniform on before the truck leaves the shop. The price is written and agreed before any work starts, no exceptions. Every completed job carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing, so if something isn’t right, we come back and make it right, no paperwork, no arguing. Our trucks carry springs, cables, openers, and hardware for all major brands, LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, Craftsman, and Raynor, which means most repairs finish in a single visit. The K.E.Y.S. code, Krafted right, Every time, Your home first, Standing behind it, isn’t a poster on the wall. It’s how we decide who to hire, who to promote, and on the rare occasion, who to let go. Whether you’ve got a stuck door in Mission Viejo at noon or an emergency in Laguna Hills at midnight, the standard doesn’t change.
